Intellectualizing

Do you have a lot of insight into what you’re struggling with, but still can’t seem to feel any better? You know WHAT you want to change, and even have an understanding of all of the things in your past that have caused these issues, but still can’t seem to make progress. If so, you may be intellectualizing. People who intellectualize often have a deep understanding of themselves and their lives, but still end up feeling stuck. This is because insight and understanding are only the first step towards healing, not the means by which healing happens. Healing can only happen when we truly process the hurt we’ve experienced, on an emotional and physical level, not just intellectually. Intellectualizing is a defense mechanism that we develop to avoid pain by living in logic, but it ultimately ends up prolonging it.

I enjoy helping intellectualizers to get more in touch with their emotions and their bodies in order to truly process past hurts that continue to negatively impact their lives. I also enjoy helping intellectualizers learn how to listen to, interpret, and care for their emotions in order to more effectively navigate emotional experiences in their day to day lives.
